In the footsteps of the ‘Zookeeper’s wife’

The Zookeeper’s Wife is a 2017 war drama film directed by Niki Caro, based on Diane Ackerman’s non-fiction book of the same name. The film tells the true story of how Jan and Antonina Żabiński rescued hundreds of Jews from the Germans by hiding them in their villa in the Warsaw zoo during WW2.

————————————————————————————————-

The Żabiński Villa in the Warsaw zoo was known as ‘The Villa under the Crazy Star‘. By those who survived thanks to the Żabińskis it was named ‘an asylum’, ‘a shelter’, ‘an ark’… while Antonina was compared to ‘an Angel’. The couple was awarded the Yad Vashem title of the Righteous Among the Nations in 1965. In his speech Jan Żabiński then said: ‘I was risking and gave shelter not because they were Jews, but because they were victimized. If the Germans were victimized, I would have done the same. We’re talking here about people who were sentenced, but they did nothing wrong. It was terrifying. My obligation as a man was to help them. It was a simple decency’
